Your Nissan Versa is equipped with an advanced Event Data Recorder (EDR). The main core purpose of this built-in EDR system is to record data during certain sudden crash or near-crash-like situations—such as an air bag deployment event or a heavy impact against a road obstacle—to assist safety researchers and engineers in understanding how a vehicle's mechanical and electronic systems performed. The EDR is specifically designed to record technical data related to general vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a very short duration of time, typically lasting 30 seconds or less.
The EDR integrated into your Nissan Versa is engineered to record essential operational data such as:
- How various critical mechanical and electronic systems in your vehicle were operating leading up to the event;
- Whether or not the driver and front passenger safety belts were securely buckled and fastened;
- How far, if at all, the driver was depressing the accelerator pedal and/or the brake pedal; and,
- How fast the vehicle was traveling at the exact time of the incident.
- Please note that cabin conversations, audio, and ambient sounds are never recorded.
These recorded technical data can help provide a much clearer, objective understanding of the complex circumstances under which highway crashes and personal injuries occur. NOTE: EDR data are recorded by your Nissan Versa only if a significant, non-trivial crash situation occurs; absolutely no data are recorded by the EDR under normal everyday driving conditions, and no personal identifying data (such as driver name, gender, age, or specific crash location) are ever captured. However, outside entities such as law enforcement agencies could potentially combine the retrieved EDR data with other personally identifying information routinely acquired during an official post-crash investigation.
To read or extract data recorded by an onboard EDR, specialized diagnostic equipment is required, along with direct physical access to the vehicle or the EDR module itself. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and authorized NISSAN dealers, other authorized parties—such as law enforcement officers possessing the specialized extraction equipment—can read the stored information if they are granted legal access to the vehicle or the EDR.
EDR data stored in your vehicle will only be accessed with the explicit consent of the vehicle owner or lessee, or as otherwise strictly required or permitted by applicable state, federal, or provincial laws.
