Nissan Versa: Maintenance and schedules - Explanation of scheduled maintenance items
The following detailed descriptions are provided to give you a comprehensive understanding of the scheduled maintenance items that should be regularly inspected, serviced, or replaced on your Nissan Versa. The official maintenance schedule clearly indicates at which precise mileage and time intervals each specific item requires professional attention.
In addition to these scheduled services, your vehicle requires that several critical items be routinely checked during normal day-to-day operation.
Maintenance items marked with an asterisk ("*") are recommended by NISSAN to ensure optimal and reliable vehicle operation.
Please note that you are not legally required to perform maintenance on these specific asterisked items in order to maintain or preserve the factory warranties that come with your new NISSAN. However, other listed maintenance items and regular intervals are required to keep your coverage valid.

NOTE:
NISSAN does not advocate the use of non-OEM approved aftermarket engine and fluid flushing systems, and strongly advises against performing these unvalidated flushing services on any NISSAN product. Many of these aftermarket flushing systems utilize harsh chemical additives or unapproved solvents, the long-term effects of which have never been validated or tested by NISSAN engineers.
Emission control system maintenance
Air cleaner filter: Replace the engine air filter element at the specified factory mileage intervals to maintain proper airflow and combustion efficiency.
When driving your Nissan Versa for prolonged periods in heavy dust, dirt, or construction conditions, inspect and check or replace the air filter element much more frequently.
Engine coolant*: Drain and replace the engine coolant at the specified calendar and mileage interval. When adding or completely replacing coolant, make certain to use only Genuine NISSAN Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (distinctive blue formula) or an exact equivalent mixed with the proper proportions.
NOTE: Mixing any other chemical type of coolant or using non-distilled tap water may chemically degrade the fluid and significantly reduce the recommended service life interval of the engine coolant.
Engine Drive belts*: Inspect all engine accessory drive belts for surface wear, fraying edges, deep cracking, and correct mechanical tension. Replace any worn or damaged drive belts immediately.
Engine oil and oil filter: Replace the engine oil and spin-on oil filter at the specified regular mileage and time intervals to protect internal engine components.
Fuel lines*: Check all fuel hoses, metal delivery piping, and secure connections for any signs of fluid leaks, looseness, or material deterioration. Tighten all hose connections or replace damaged fuel components as necessary.
Spark plugs: Replace the ignition spark plugs at the specified maintenance intervals.
Always install brand-new replacement plugs of the exact same heat range and specification as originally equipped from the factory.
Chassis and body maintenance
Brake lines and cables: Visually inspect all hydraulic brake lines, flexible hoses, and parking brake cables for proper routing and installation. Check carefully for rubbing, chafing, physical cracks, material deterioration, and any visible signs of fluid leaking.
Replace any deteriorated, worn, or damaged brake components immediately to ensure safety.
Brake pads, rotors, drums and linings: Thoroughly inspect the disc brake pads, brake rotors, brake drums, and shoe linings for abnormal wear, material deterioration, and fluid leaks. Replace any deteriorated, thin, or damaged brake parts immediately.
Exhaust system: Visually inspect the steel exhaust pipes, muffler assembly, and mounting hangers for gas leaks, structural cracks, rust deterioration, and physical damage. Tighten all bracket connections or replace damaged exhaust parts as necessary.
Steering gear and linkage, axle and suspension parts, drive shaft boots: Check all steering components, suspension linkages, and CV axle joint boots for physical damage, loose hardware, and any leakage of lubricating oil or protective grease. If your Nissan Versa is operated frequently under severe driving conditions, inspect these components much more frequently.
Tire rotation: Rotate the tires on your Nissan Versa at the specified mileage interval shown in the official maintenance schedule.
When performing tire rotations, check each tire carefully for structural damage and abnormal or uneven wear patterns. Replace the tires if necessary.
Transmission fluid/oil: Visually inspect the transmission housing and seals for signs of fluid leakage at specified regular intervals.
If your vehicle is frequently fitted with a car-top luggage carrier, used for towing a trailer, equipped with a camper attachment, or driven consistently on rough, unpaved, or muddy roads:
