Nissan Versa: Monitor, climate, audio, phone and voice recognition systems - Starting/Stopping the engine (models with NISSAN Intelligent Key system)
Starting the engine
1. First, check and confirm that the mechanical parking brake is firmly applied to secure the vehicle.
2. With the transmission shift position placed securely in either P (Park) or N (Neutral), fully depress the foot brake pedal down to the floorboards.
3. Push and release the dash-mounted push-button ignition switch to fire up and start the engine of your Nissan Versa.
- If the engine is exceptionally hard to start during extremely freezing winter weather conditions or right after a previous stall, depress the accelerator pedal down just a little bit—approximately 1/3 of the way to the floor—and while holding it steady, crank the engine.
Release the accelerator pedal completely the moment the engine catches and starts.
- If the engine proves very difficult to start because it has become flooded with excess fuel, depress the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there. Push the push-button ignition switch to the ON position to start cranking the engine over. After 5 or 6 seconds, stop the cranking process by pushing the ignition switch to the LOCK position. After stopping, release your foot from the accelerator pedal. Then, crank the engine with your foot completely off the accelerator pedal by depressing the brake pedal and pushing the ignition switch once more to start the engine.
If the engine fires up successfully but fails to keep running smoothly, repeat the entire starting procedure outlined above.
CAUTION
Never operate the starter motor continuously for more than 15 seconds at any one time. If the engine does not start promptly, push the push-button ignition switch to the OFF position and wait at least 10 seconds before attempting to crank the engine again, otherwise the starter motor could overheat and suffer permanent damage.
4. Warm-up:
Allow the engine of your Nissan Versa to idle smoothly for at least 30 seconds immediately after starting. Do not race or rev the engine while it is warming up. Drive off at a moderate, gentle speed for a short distance first, especially when operating in cold winter weather. In freezing cold weather conditions, keep the engine running for a minimum of 2 to 3 minutes before shutting it off. Repeatedly starting and stopping the engine over a very short period of time without letting it reach operating temperature may make your vehicle significantly more difficult to start next time.
NOTE:
Care should be taken to actively avoid everyday situations that can lead to potential 12V battery discharge and unexpected no-start conditions, such as:
1. The installation or extended use of aftermarket electronic accessories that continue to consume battery power when the engine is not running (such as phone chargers, portable GPS units, DVD players, dash cams, etc.).
2. The vehicle is not driven on a regular schedule and/or is only used for very short local trips.
In these specific cases, the battery may periodically need to be charged with an external battery charger or tender to maintain optimum battery health.
Remote Engine Start
Vehicles that have been started remotely using the Remote Engine Start feature require the push-button ignition switch to be manually transitioned into the ON position before the transmission shift lever can be shifted out of the P (Park) position.
To place the ignition switch in the ON position safely, follow these simple steps: 1. Make sure that you are carrying the authorized Intelligent Key on your person.
2. Firmly depress and hold the foot brake pedal.
3. Push the ignition switch once to transition the system into the ON position.
Stopping the engine
WARNING
To completely avoid any risk of personal injury or fatal accidents resulting from unwanted vehicle movement, always make sure your Nissan Versa is fully in the P (Park) position and the parking brake is applied before exiting the vehicle cabin.
To turn your vehicle OFF properly:
1. Apply the mechanical parking brake securely.
2. Move the transmission shift lever into the P (Park) position.
3. Push the push-button ignition switch once.
Certain electrical accessories, such as the premium audio system, can still be operated for a brief period after shutdown. Once the driver's door is opened, these accessories will automatically turn off.
If the push-button ignition switch is pressed while the transmission shift lever is left in any position other than P (Park), the engine will shut off, but your Nissan Versa will enter AUTO ACC mode instead of completely powering down. A warning message may appear on the screen and an audible indicator chime will sound. Perform the following corrective procedure to turn the vehicle completely off:
1. Check and ensure that the parking brake is securely applied.
2. Depress and hold the foot brake pedal.
3. Move the transmission shift lever into the P (Park) position.
4. Push the ignition switch to complete the shutdown.
