Nissan Versa: Do-it-yourself - Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) fluid

CAUTION

  • NISSAN strictly recommends using Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 (or an exact equivalent) EXCLUSIVELY in the continuously variable transmissions of vehicles like your Nissan Versa. Never mix different transmission fluids together.
  • Do not use conventional Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) or manual transmission fluid in a NISSAN CVT, as doing so will cause severe mechanical damage to the transmission. Any internal damage caused by the use of unrecommended fluids is completely excluded from coverage under NISSAN's New Vehicle Limited Warranty outlined in your official Warranty Information Booklet.
  • Using aftermarket fluids that are not certified as equivalent to Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 may also lead to catastrophic CVT failure. Damage resulting from the use of alternative fluids outside of factory guidelines is not covered under the NISSAN New Vehicle Limited Warranty outlined in your Warranty Information Booklet.

Whenever professional inspection, fluid checking, or complete replacement of your CVT fluid is required for your Nissan Versa, it is strongly recommended that you visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for expert servicing.

Brake and clutch fluid

WARNING

  • Always use fresh brake and clutch fluid taken exclusively from a freshly opened, factory-sealed container.

    Old, degraded, or moisture-contaminated fluid can severely damage the hydraulic brake and manual clutch (if so equipped) systems of your Nissan Versa. The use of improper or contaminated fluids will compromise hydraulic pressure and drastically reduce the vehicle's safe stopping ability.

  • Always thoroughly clean and wipe down the fluid reservoir filler cap before removing it to prevent dirt from entering the system.
  • Automotive brake and clutch fluid is toxic and poisonous; it should always be stored carefully in its original marked container entirely out of reach of children and pets.

CAUTION

Do not spill brake or clutch fluid onto any painted body surfaces of your Nissan Versa.

Hydraulic fluid will chemically react with and damage the automotive paint finish. If fluid is accidentally spilled, immediately wash and rinse the affected surface thoroughly with plenty of clean water.

Brake fluid

Check the brake fluid level in the clear master cylinder reservoir. If you observe that the fluid level has dropped below the MIN line mark B , or if the dashboard brake warning light illuminates unexpectedly, add Genuine NISSAN Brake Fluid or an equivalent high-quality DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid up to the MAX line mark A . If you find that brake fluid must be replenished frequently, the hydraulic system should be inspected for leaks. It is recommended that you visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for this professional service.

Clutch fluid

Check the fluid level inside the shared reservoir. On manual transmission models of the Nissan Versa, the brake fluid master reservoir is shared directly with the clutch hydraulic actuation system.

If the fluid level drops below the MIN line mark B , or if the red brake warning light turns on while driving, add Genuine NISSAN Brake Fluid or an equivalent DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid up to the upper MAX line mark A . If fluid needs to be added on a frequent basis, it is recommended that you schedule a service visit with an authorized NISSAN dealer.
