Nissan Versa: Pre-driving checks and adjustments - Doors

When the doors of your Nissan Versa are securely locked using one of the primary methods detailed below, they are designed to prevent access from both the inside and outside. Under these circumstances, neither the interior nor exterior door handles will function to open the doors. To safely open any of the doors, the locking mechanism must first be fully disengaged to the unlocked position.

WARNING

For your maximum protection, always ensure that all vehicle doors remain locked while your Nissan Versa is in motion. When combined with the proper use of seat belts, locked doors provide a significantly higher level of occupant safety in the event of an accident by preventing passengers from being ejected from the cabin. Keeping the doors locked also acts as a critical safeguard to prevent children or other passengers from opening them unintentionally while driving, and serves as an effective barrier against unwanted intruders when stopped.
Safety is paramount: before opening any door on your Nissan Versa to exit, always check your surroundings thoroughly and look out for oncoming traffic, cyclists, or pedestrians to avoid hazardous collisions.
To prevent serious injury or fatal accidents resulting from the accidental operation of vehicle systems, entrapment in power windows, or unexpected door lock activation, never leave children, individuals who require assistance, or pets unattended in your Nissan Versa. Furthermore, temperatures inside a closed vehicle cabin on warm or hot days can rise rapidly to extreme levels, creating a life-threatening environment that poses an immediate risk of heatstroke, severe injury, or death to people and pets left inside.

Locking with key

Driver's side

To lock or unlock your vehicle manually from the exterior, insert the physical key into the driver's side key cylinder and turn it firmly in the correct direction as shown in the illustration.

Manual

For standard manual operation of the driver's door lock, turn the physical key toward the front of the vehicle 1 to secure the lock. To unlock the driver's door, rotate the key toward the rear of the vehicle 2.

Selective open (if so equipped)

On Nissan Versa models equipped with a selective power door lock system, the exterior door key cylinder provides a convenient way to lock or unlock all doors simultaneously.

Turning the physical key toward the front 1 of the vehicle in the driver's door cylinder will instantly lock all of the passenger doors and the driver's door at once.

Turning the key once toward the rear 2 of the vehicle will unlock only the driver's door. To unlock all other doors, return the key to its vertical, neutral position 3 (the only position in which the physical key can be inserted or extracted) and turn it toward the rear of the vehicle a second time within 5 seconds to unlock all remaining doors 4.

Locking with inside lock knob

To lock any individual door from the inside without using a key, manually push the inside door lock knob forward to the lock position 1, and then close the door behind you when exiting.

To unlock any door from inside the cabin without utilizing a key, pull or slide the manual inside lock knob backward to the designated unlock position 2.

Locking with power door lock switch

To lock all doors simultaneously from inside the cabin without your key, press the power door lock switch located on either the driver's or front passenger's armrest to the lock position 1. When locking your Nissan Versa using this convenient power switch, always take extra care to ensure you have your keys with you and do not accidentally leave them behind inside the vehicle.

To instantly unlock all passenger doors and the driver's door simultaneously without a physical key, simply push the power door lock switch (on the driver's or front passenger's door panel) to the unlock position 2.

Lockout protection

To prevent you from being stranded, the Nissan Versa is equipped with an intelligent lockout protection system. If any door is left open and the power door lock switch is pressed to the lock position, all doors will temporarily lock; however, if the vehicle detects that the Intelligent Key has been left inside the cabin after all of the doors are subsequently closed, all doors will immediately unlock automatically and an audible warning chime will sound to alert you.

These built-in safeguarding functions are specifically engineered to minimize the risk of accidentally locking your Nissan Versa Intelligent Key inside the vehicle.

Automatic door locks

For enhanced safety and security, all doors on your Nissan Versa will lock automatically once the vehicle's forward speed reaches or exceeds approximately 15 mph (24 km/h).

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) (if so equipped) On Nissan Versa models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission, all doors (or, on some models, just the driver's door) will automatically unlock when the gear selector is shifted into the P (Park) position, when the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position, or when the physical key is fully extracted from the ignition switch.
Manual transmission (if so equipped) On manual transmission Nissan Versa models, all doors (or just the driver's door, depending on the trim package) will unlock automatically the moment the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position or the physical key is removed from the ignition switch cylinder.

NOTE:

Depending on your vehicle's trim level, the automatic door unlock configurations can be customized to suit your preferences. This function can be modified or turned off using the "Vehicle Settings" menu within the vehicle information display on the instrument cluster of your Nissan Versa.

Child safety rear door lock

The integrated child safety locks are designed to prevent passengers, especially young children, from accidentally opening the rear doors of your Nissan Versa from the inside while the car is stationary or in motion.

The mechanical child safety lock levers are located directly on the inner edge of each rear door frame, accessible only when the door is open.

When the mechanical lever is slid down to the unlock position 2, the rear door operates normally and can be opened freely from either the outside or the inside of the cabin.

When the lever is slid up to the manual LOCK position 1, the inner door handle is completely bypassed, and the door can only be opened from the outside using the exterior door handle.
