Nissan Versa: In case of emergency - Jump starting
To safely start your Nissan Versa engine using a booster battery, the precise instructions and essential safety precautions outlined below must be followed carefully.
WARNING
- If performed incorrectly, jump starting can lead to a dangerous battery explosion, resulting in severe personal injury or even death. It could also cause substantial electrical damage to your vehicle.
- Explosive and flammable hydrogen gas is constantly present in the immediate vicinity of the automotive battery.
Always keep all sparks, open flames, and smoking materials completely away from the battery area.
- Do not allow corrosive battery fluid to come into direct contact with your eyes, skin, clothing, or painted vehicle surfaces. Battery fluid is a highly corrosive sulfuric acid solution capable of causing severe chemical burns. If the fluid should accidentally contact any surface or skin, immediately flush the affected area thoroughly with clean water.
- Always keep automotive batteries completely out of the reach of children.
- The external booster battery used must be rated strictly at 12 volts. The use of a battery with an improper voltage rating can severely damage your vehicle electrical systems.
- Whenever you are working on or near a vehicle battery, always wear suitable protective eye gear (such as safety goggles or industrial side-shield spectacles) and remove any rings, metal bands, or other jewelry. Never lean directly over the battery housing when performing a jump start.
- Never attempt to jump start a frozen battery. A frozen battery could rupture or explode and cause serious personal injuries.
- Your Nissan Versa is equipped with an automatic engine cooling fan that can activate at any time independently of the ignition. Keep your hands, clothing, and tools safely away from the fan blades at all times.

Always strictly follow the step-by-step jump-starting instructions outlined below.
Failing to follow these instructions properly could result in permanent damage to the vehicle charging system and cause severe personal injury.
1. If the booster battery is housed in another vehicle, position the two vehicles close enough to bring their respective batteries near each other, ensuring maximum jumper cable reach.
Do not allow the metal bodies of the two vehicles to touch each other at any point.
2. Firmly apply the parking brake on both vehicles. Shift the manual transmission into N (Neutral) or the Continuously Variable Transmission into P (Park). Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads and accessories, including headlights, heater, audio system, and air conditioner.
3. Place the ignition switch of your Nissan Versa into the LOCK or OFF position.
4. Connect the heavy-duty jumper cables in the exact numerical and alphabetical sequence illustrated ( A , B , C , D ).
CAUTION
- Always connect the positive cable clamp (+) to the positive terminal (+) first, and the negative cable clamp (−) to a secure engine body ground point (such as a strut mounting bolt or engine lift bracket)—never connect the negative clamp directly to the negative battery terminal.
- Make certain that the jumper cables are routed securely so they cannot touch any moving parts inside the engine compartment, and ensure that the cable clamps do not accidentally contact any other metal components.
5. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and let it run at a steady idle for a few minutes to stabilize power.
6. Maintain the engine speed of the booster vehicle at approximately 2,000 rpm while you attempt to start the engine of your Nissan Versa.
CAUTION
Do not keep the starter motor engaged continuously for more than 10 seconds at a time. If the engine does not start right away, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and wait 3 to 4 seconds before trying to crank the engine again.
7. After the engine has successfully started and is running smoothly, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the exact reverse order: remove the negative cable first, followed by the positive cable.
Push starting
CAUTION
- Never attempt to push start your Nissan Versa. Doing so can cause unburned fuel to flood the exhaust and permanently damage the expensive three-way catalyst.
- Both Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and manual transmission models cannot be push-started or tow-started under any circumstances.
Attempting a push or tow start will cause severe internal transmission damage.
- For manual transmission models, never try to start the vehicle by pulling or towing it with another vehicle. When the engine fires up, the sudden forward surge could cause your vehicle to collide directly with the towing vehicle.
- Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) models cannot be push-started or tow-started safely. Any attempt to do so will result in catastrophic transmission failure.
