Nissan Versa: Monitor, climate, audio, phone and voice recognition systems - Power steering

WARNING

  • If the engine is not running or is accidentally shut off while the Nissan Versa is in motion, the electronic or hydraulic power assist for the steering system will cease to function immediately.

Consequently, the steering wheel will become significantly heavier and much harder to operate manually.

  • When the power steering warning light illuminates while the engine is running normally, it signals that there is no power assist active for the steering system. You will still maintain physical control of your Nissan Versa, but the steering will require much greater physical effort to operate. Have the power steering system professionally inspected without delay. It is strongly recommended that you visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for this specialized service.

The advanced power steering system in your Nissan Versa is engineered to provide smooth, responsive power assist while driving, allowing you to turn and maneuver the steering wheel with minimal physical effort.

When the steering wheel is operated repeatedly, cranked continuously, or held at full lock while parallel parking or maneuvering at very low speeds, the power assist level for the steering wheel will be temporarily reduced by the system control unit.

This temporary reduction is an intentional protective measure designed to prevent overheating of the power steering system and safeguard internal components from permanent damage. While power assist is reduced, steering wheel operation will temporarily feel heavy and require more effort. Once the internal temperature of the power steering system cools down, the normal power assist level will automatically return to standard operation.

Avoid repeating excessive, lock-to-lock steering wheel maneuvers in rapid succession, as this can trigger thermal protection and cause the power steering system to overheat.

You may occasionally hear a soft operational hum or mechanical sound when the steering wheel is turned quickly from side to side. Please note that this normal sound does not indicate a system malfunction.

If the dedicated power steering warning light illuminates on your instrument cluster while the engine is running, it indicates that the power steering system is not functioning at peak performance and may require immediate professional servicing.

Have the power steering system thoroughly checked. It is recommended that you visit an authorized NISSAN dealer for this service.

When the power steering warning light remains illuminated with the engine running, there will be no power assist acting on the steering rack, but you will retain full mechanical control of your Nissan Versa. Under these conditions, much greater steering effort is required to turn the steering wheel, particularly when executing sharp turns, tight parking maneuvers, or driving at low speeds.
