Nissan Versa: Technical and consumer information for your Nissan Versa - Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test

Due to strict legal environmental requirements enforced in various U.S. states and Canadian Provinces, your Nissan Versa may be legally required to enter what is known as the "ready condition" before undergoing an official Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) emissions control system test.

The vehicle's onboard computer is automatically set to the "ready condition" when it is driven naturally through a specific sequence of normal driving patterns. Under most circumstances, this required ready condition can be achieved easily through ordinary, everyday usage of your vehicle.

However, if a critical powertrain system component has been recently repaired, serviced, or if the vehicle battery has been disconnected for any reason, your Nissan Versa may be automatically reset back to a "not ready" operational condition.

Before taking your vehicle to an official testing station, you can easily check your Nissan Versa inspection/maintenance test readiness condition yourself. Simply place the ignition switch in the ON position without starting the engine. If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) comes on and remains lit steady for 20 seconds before starting to blink for 10 seconds, the I/M test condition is currently "not ready." If the MIL does not blink after those 20 seconds, the I/M test condition is successfully "ready."
