Nissan Versa: Pre-driving checks and adjustments - Trunk lid

WARNING

Never drive your Nissan Versa with the trunk lid open.

An open trunk lid can create a vacuum effect, allowing dangerous carbon monoxide and exhaust gases to be drawn directly into the vehicle's passenger cabin.
Closely supervise children whenever they are playing around cars to prevent them from climbing inside and becoming locked in the trunk, which can lead to heatstroke, suffocation, or serious injury. Always keep the vehicle locked, ensure the rear seatbacks and trunk lid are securely latched when the car is not in use, and keep all car keys and key fobs out of the reach of children.

Key operation

Using the mechanical key to unlock the Nissan Versa trunk lid via the key cylinder

To open the Nissan Versa trunk lid using your mechanical key, insert the key into the key cylinder located on the trunk and turn it clockwise to release the lock mechanism.

To close the trunk lid, gently lower the lid and then firmly push it down until the latch clicks and secures it in place.

The convenient mechanical trunk lid release lever is located on the cabin floor to the left of the driver's seat, next to the fuel-filler door release.

To open the trunk lid from the driver's seat of your Nissan Versa, simply pull the opener lever upward.

To close the trunk lid, lower it and push the lid down firmly to engage the latch securely.

Your Nissan Versa is equipped with an interior trunk lid release mechanism that provides a critical emergency means of escape for children and adults in the event they accidentally become locked inside the trunk compartment.

To open the trunk from the inside, locate and pull the illuminated release handle in the direction of the arrow until the lock releases, and then push up on the trunk lid to open it. The safety release handle is manufactured from a special phosphorescent material that glows in the dark after being exposed to even brief amounts of ambient light.

This emergency release handle is located on the inside of the trunk compartment, positioned directly on the trunk lock assembly at the center of the trunk lid.

Interior trunk access

For added cargo convenience, the trunk compartment of the Nissan Versa can be accessed directly from either the driver's side or the passenger's side of the folding rear seat.

1. Slide the front seat to its most forward position to clear enough space for the rear seatback to fold down.

2. Pull straight up on the release knob located on the top shoulder of the rear seatback.

3. Fold the driver's or passenger's side rear seatback forward to open up cargo access to the trunk.

WARNING

Never allow anyone to ride in the cargo area or on the rear seatback when it is folded down. Riding in these areas without proper safety restraints or seatbelts could result in severe injury or death in the event of an accident or a sudden braking maneuver.
Properly secure all items in the cargo area using heavy-duty ropes or tie-down straps to prevent cargo from sliding, shifting, or rolling. Never stack cargo higher than the seatbacks, as unsecured cargo can fly forward and cause serious personal injury during a sudden stop or collision.
When returning the Nissan Versa seatbacks to their upright position, always ensure they are fully pushed back and securely locked into the latched position. If the seatbacks are not completely locked, they could collapse forward, injuring passengers during sudden braking or an accident.
